Shi Yunyu and Guo Guangcan Are Elected Academicians of Third World Academy of Sciences

   The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) held its 20th Congress in Durban, South Africa, from October 19 to 23. Over 400 scientists from different countries attended the congress. 50 new academicians were elected during the meeting. Professor Shi Yunyu of USTC School of Life Sciences and Professor Guo Guangcan of the Quantum Information Laboratory were among the newly-elected academicians. 

   In addition, three other new TWAS academicians are also from mainland China: Chen Lin and Zhu Daoben of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Chen Mufa of the Beijing Normal University. The five Chinese scholars are allCAS academicians. Three of them, Shi Yunyu, Guo Guangcan and Chen Lin, graduated from USTC.

   TWAS was established on November 10, 1983, at the suggestion of the late Nobel Prize winning physicist Abdus Salam as a non-government, non-political, non-profit international science organization. It is based in Trieste, Italy. China became its member in 1983. 

   TWAS has 950 academicians at present, 160 of whom are Chinese scientists. TWAS academicians are elected from among academies of sciences, universities and research institutes of Third World countries and science organizations of developed nations, and they have each made outstanding contributions to the development of science in the Third World countries.
