USTC Delegation Headed by President Hou Jianguo Visits the U.S. and Makes Recruitments

   The USTC delegation headed by President Hou Jianguo held receptions at Ann Arbor and Chicago between May 29 and June 1. The delegation alsovisited the University of Chicago and met with alumni. 

   The first reception was held at Ann Arbor at 9:00 on May 30. Over 100 scholars and USTC alumni from the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, University of Minnesota and other institutions attended the reception.

   During the reception, President Hou Jianguo briefed the participants on USTC’s achievements and latest developments. He emphasized that talented people are the key to building a first-class university and USTC are making great efforts to provide good teaching and research conditions in order to attract outstanding scholars from across the world to come and work at USTC. Vice President Dou Xiankang talked about USTC’s enrollments, programs of study and faculty development, and also specified its disciplines and positions for which recruitments would be made. After their speeches, they met with various groups for detailed discussions, along with the dean of the School of Information Science and Technology Li Weiping, Personnel Department director Chu Jiaru, and assistant to the dean of the School of Life Sciences Wu Mian.

   

   Next, the delegation held its second reception in Chicago on the afternoon of May 31, which was attended by more than 100 USTC alumni and friends from the University of Chicago, Northwest University, Illinois Institute of Technology and other universities. 

  The USTC delegation visited the University of Chicago on the morning of June 1 and was warmly received by its vice president Donald Levy, vice dean of undergraduate education Martha Merritt, director of International Office Daniela Abuzatoraie, chair of the Chemistry Department Richard Jordan, and USTC alumni Professors Zhengtian Lu and Chuan He. They had detailed discussions on research collaborations and student exchange programs between the two universities and reached an initial intent on undergraduate student exchange programs.

 

   Established by John D. Rockefeller in 1891, the University of Chicago is a private university with a worldwide reputation of devotion to academic fields. It ranked seventh in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2009.
